Iowah, US
In the bottem right corner of the diagram you see Jacob Bottema (born in 1880), husband of
Christina Petronella Leegte (born in 1887).
A grandson of this couple (Theodorus Jacobus Bottema, born in Kloosterburen on February 18,
1937) dies in Ottawa, Canada on May 20, 2007.
From his marriage with Diana Yvonne Julien three children are born: Danielle Yvonne, Linda
Johanne and Michel Julien.
Note 2:
The "Record of Emigrants of the province of Groningen (National Archives, Record of emigrants,
Groningen (Province, several years)) show a total of 11 persons with the surname Bottema.
Almost all of them emigrate to the United States.
Only the two brothers Jacob and Regnerus (mentioned in the diagram) are Roman Catholic. The
others are Protestant.
Probably they are no blood relatives of Jacob and Regnerus.
That also means, that a number of people with the surname Bottema, living in the US, are no
relatives of our family Bottema.
MARRIED SONS.
As I explained in the introduction, I have added the surnames of the men in the overview below
of the first seven generations of married sons, except of course when there is only a patronymic
in the files.
The surname of the man and the woman are followed by the year of birth in brackets .
Under the name of the man there is a line starting with a number (except in the last
generation). That number represents the number of children that the man has had in total,
possibly with multiple wives.
Behind the number of children is the main seat of the family.
(Note 1: KBUREN = KLOOSTERBUREN
UITHMEEDEN = UITHUIZERMEEDEN).
The last line shows the name and
birth of spouse(s), preceded by
the abbreviation 'ho.' = 'husband of'
A red line on the right side of the couple
means, that I didn’t find married sons
of this couple.
In this overview, three couples are boxed in yellow and three couples are boxed in green.
The wives of the yellow couples are daughters of the green couples:
•
Thomas A. Bottema is married to Margriete Jans Stiekema. Margriete is the daughter of
Joannes Hindriks Stijkema and Bouke Cornelis Scholtens.
•
Albertus Bottema is married to Bouke Stiekema. Bouke is the daughter of Jacob Jans
Stiekema and Anna Klasens van Duinen.
•
Jannes J. Bot(tema) is married to Catharina Jans Bottema. Catharina is the daughter of Jan
Jurgens Bottema and Matje Klaassens Franssen.
Although the couples in the yellow boxes are relatives, there is no need for dispensation to
marry.
I didn’t find married sons with Jan Bottema (3
rd
generation, born in 1731, top left in the
overview).
Harm Jans (3
rd
generation, son of Jan Hindriks and Remge Harms) sometimes calls himself
‘ter Schouw’.
His children call themselves ‘ter Schouw’ as well, but this branche dies after 2 generations.
Apart from these two exceptions, the following surnames appear in the above diagram from top
to bottom:
• Stiekema or Stijkema,
• then Lammerts and
• finally Bot or Bottema.
In this overview it is easy to see how the family has spread over of Groningen and the US.
The emigrants to the US are indicated by the flag of that country.
William Bot and Debora Schreuder are also known from the genealogy Alma. They leave with
their family with 8 children in 1886 to Ghent, Minnesota.
The brothers Jacob en Regnerus Bottema emigrate to the US as well. They leave for Iowah in
1895.
